When selecting the right equipment for running, socks are usually an overlooked item. Beginners tend to believe that socks make no real difference when running. Instead, in the last years, even this almost forgotten piece of clothing has become a specialized item.
Socks producing companies perfectioned this product introducing new materials and new technologies: fabrics, padding and other factors can make a difference when dealing with feet moisture, blood circulation, pressure, shear, body temperature, posture and mechanical reaction.
Using plain cotton sock to run, is today considered one of the most frequent mistake done by beginners, as the cotton socks hold onto moisture, which is more likely to provoke infections like the athlete's foot. A growing number of runners is choosing instead socks made by fabric blends and not only to avoid this common disease: the new materials are usually thinner than cotton, and could be more comfortable for those with delicate feet.
Also the blend of one or more fabrics help decrease shear and limit the side to side motion of the foot. Among the futuristic type of socks available out there, there are the compression socks (useful for swelling problems), the cushioning socks (with gel embedded in the sole), and the medical socks (releasing antifungal and antibacterial disinfectants).
