In fact, drinking alcohol is like eating liquid fat and swallowing poison (okay, our body breaks down the poison but it is a poison, and alcohol is absorbed into our body faster than fat)!
If we start with a glass of champagne before eating, we are apt to eat and drink more than we intend to. If we have that glass before the appetizers are served on an empty stomach (no food for hours), we are even more likely to over- indulge due to a quick rise and drop of our blood sugar. And some of us may think that since we are going from one celebration to another, we should save most of our
calories for the party by not eating enough during the day. But, have you ever done just that, only to eat and drink more? And let's not forget how many times we may say "what the heck" as we reach for another glass after our resistance is lowered (I know I have blown my diet this way)?
How to moderate over this holiday season?
Don't save calories up for the party. Eat often all day, eat small, but eat.
Have a small snack an hour before the party.
Try to have a piece of cheese or an appetizer with the first
drink.
Drink lots of water all day even when not thirsty and drink a few sips in- between each
drink. Alcohol causes dehydration
and fatigue (big time, if we over do) the next day.
Ask the waiter to not refill the glass until it's empty. We can keep track of how much we are drinking this way (ignorance does not result in bliss).
Lastly, remember, the holiday season is just barely getting started and there are lots of parties yet to come.
Here's to a healthy, safe and fun holiday season!
