Many of us who have been
to a dietitian for help to lose weight have keep a food
record/journal. Weight Watchers and other such programs ask
members to tract their eating. Why?
-
Recording
food intake forces us to take responsibility and face
our food choices.
-
A
food journal can help us to identify when and why we eat
and help us to learn more about our eating patterns.
-
Keeping
a food record can help us to keep track of the amount of
calories we take in, because ignorance and forgetfulness
is not bliss ( we do want to lose?).
Keeping
a food record can create discomfort because we need to
record the food choices we would rather not remember or it
helps to remind us not to choose a certain food. Discomfort
means conflict, which in this case can be good.
When we face our food choices, we can take responsibility
for change them. When we are reminded of poor food choices,
the discomfort we feel and the conflict we feel can keep us
on track. Conflict is good, despite that it feels bad. When
we feel conflict we are more motivated to resolve it or
change. No conflict, no change!
Losing weight and especially maintaining a weight loss is
never easy, it can be a battle. But, would you even work
toward weight loss if you were happy with the status quo?
Try keeping a journal, even if it's only for a couple of
days per week and get in the habit. Stick with it and soon
you might be making more changes with less and less
conflict.
