Maratona BR de Revezamento: record field and controversy

The marathon relay "Maratona BR de Revezamento", held on May 18 in Rio de Janeiro, confirmed the success of this kind of race attracting more than 12,000 runners in the 2, 4, and 8 members teams. One of the reasons of this success is the friendly atmosphere among the teams that attracts people that are not used to take part in races.

If the atmosphere among the recreational runners was friendly, the same couldn't be said about the competitive teams. The final result was polemical. The 2 first teams were disqualified because they used 7 runners in the 8 runners relay.

Things were even more confused because the practice of having a runner doing 2 relay legs were allowed in the previous editions. It is suspect that the main reason to disqualification was that the organizers didn't want to pay the US$ 50.000 for the team that completed the marathon under 2 hours -  team "Pão de Açúcar / BM&F / Mizuno", the first to complete the course, did it in 1:59:54. The team "Pão de Açúcar / BM&F / Mizuno" said he is going to prosecute the organizers.
